how

I wanted to learn about 3D printing technology and decided a maze ball would be an interesting way to start. Working with a colleague, we created a CAD file of a sphere with tunnels that would hold a small ball. I quickly learned that we had picked a challenging project to 3D print since a sphere with spherical tunnels is not easy for a printer that works by layering malleable plastic. We ended up printing each half of the sphere separately. The printer needed to add a significant amount of supports (i.e. additional plastic) to the tunnels so that they didn't collapse, but we discovered we could use a spherical dremmel to clear the supports after printing.
